The Dos and Don’ts After Windshield Replacement

According to recent research, your car maintenance costs average about 10 cents per mile that you travel. Depending on how much you drive, that can certainly add up!

When it comes to windshield maintenance, if you have a severely damaged windshield and have to purchase a replacement, be aware that what you do immediately after the replacement can impact the longevity and safety of your new windshield. So you want to be cognizant and careful. Let’s take a look at the important Dos and Don’ts after windshield replacement.

The Essential Dos

1. Wait Before Driving

Allow the adhesive to cure properly before hitting the road. Most professionals recommend waiting at least one hour after installation though some urethane adhesives may require longer. Your technician will provide specific timing based on the adhesive used and weather conditions. This waiting period is important for achieving maximum bond strength.

2. Keep Windows Slightly Open

Leave your windows cracked open about an inch for the first 24 hours. This prevents pressure buildup inside the vehicle that could stress the new seal. The slight ventilation also helps the adhesive cure more evenly by allowing air circulation.

3. Drive Gently Initially

For the first few days, avoid:

  • Slamming doors forcefully
  • Driving over rough terrain or speed bumps at high speeds
  • Taking sharp turns at excessive speeds
  • Hard braking when possible

These actions create vibrations and pressure changes that can compromise the adhesive bond while it’s still curing.

4. Inspect Regularly

Check your windshield periodically for any signs of separation, air bubbles, or water leaks. Early detection of installation issues allows for prompt correction under warranty.

The Critical Don’ts

1. Don’t Remove Retention Tape Immediately

Many installations include retention tape around the windshield edges. Don’t remove this tape for at least 24-48 hours, or until your technician advises. This tape provides additional support during the curing period.

2. Avoid Car Washes

Skip automatic car washes for at least 24 hours, preferably 48 hours. High-pressure water and strong detergents can interfere with the adhesive curing process. When you do wash your car, avoid directing high-pressure water directly at the windshield edges.

3. Don’t Use Air Conditioning or Heat Immediately

Extreme temperature changes can cause the glass to expand or contract rapidly, potentially affecting the seal. Wait at least 2-3 hours before using climate control systems, and then introduce temperature changes gradually.

4. Avoid Parking in Direct Sunlight

For the first day, try to park in shaded areas when possible. Excessive heat can cause uneven curing of the adhesive, potentially leading to weak spots in the seal.

Additional Tips for Success

Temperature and humidity affect curing times significantly. In colder weather, adhesives take longer to cure, while high humidity can accelerate the process. Your installation technician should adjust recommendations based on current conditions.

Most quality windshield installations come with warranties covering both the glass and installation. Keep your paperwork and follow all post-installation guidelines to ensure warranty coverage remains valid.
